What Should I Weigh for My Height?
This is one of the most common health questions in the world. The answer is that there is no single perfect weight. A healthy weight is actually a range that depends heavily on your bone structure (frame size), the amount of muscle mass you carry, and your age.
The Healthy BMI Range vs Ideal Body Weight (IBW)
Our calculator provides two types of data:
- The Healthy BMI Range: Based on the World Health Organization (WHO), a normal weight yields a Body Mass Index between 18.5 and 24.9. This is an excellent, flexible goal because it provides a wide ~30-40 pound range, signifying that a perfectly healthy body can have different muscle-to-fat ratios.
- Ideal Body Weight (IBW) Equations: These formulas (Devine, Robinson, Miller, Hamwi) attempt to pinpoint a single perfect number. They were originally developed to help doctors accurately dose medications based on a patient's optimal weight rather than their actual weight.
Limitations of Ideal Weight Calculators
These tools are estimates. If you are highly active and lift weights, you may weigh 20 pounds more than your "Ideal Body Weight" number, but still have a low body fat percentage and excellent cardiovascular health. Frame size is also a major factor that these formulas ignore. Someone with broad shoulders and thick bones will naturally carry more weight safely than someone with a narrower frame.
Instead of focusing strictly on the scale, we highly recommend measuring your body fat percentage and monitoring markers such as waist circumference, energy levels, and blood pressure.
