What Should I Weigh for My Height?

This is one of the most common health questions in the world. The answer is that there is no single perfect weight. A healthy weight is actually a range that depends heavily on your bone structure (frame size), the amount of muscle mass you carry, and your age.

The Healthy BMI Range vs Ideal Body Weight (IBW)

Our calculator provides two types of data:

  • The Healthy BMI Range: Based on the World Health Organization (WHO), a normal weight yields a Body Mass Index between 18.5 and 24.9. This is an excellent, flexible goal because it provides a wide ~30-40 pound range, signifying that a perfectly healthy body can have different muscle-to-fat ratios.
  • Ideal Body Weight (IBW) Equations: These formulas (Devine, Robinson, Miller, Hamwi) attempt to pinpoint a single perfect number. They were originally developed to help doctors accurately dose medications based on a patient's optimal weight rather than their actual weight.

Limitations of Ideal Weight Calculators

These tools are estimates. If you are highly active and lift weights, you may weigh 20 pounds more than your "Ideal Body Weight" number, but still have a low body fat percentage and excellent cardiovascular health. Frame size is also a major factor that these formulas ignore. Someone with broad shoulders and thick bones will naturally carry more weight safely than someone with a narrower frame.

Instead of focusing strictly on the scale, we highly recommend measuring your body fat percentage and monitoring markers such as waist circumference, energy levels, and blood pressure.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is ideal body weight calculated?
There are several medical algorithms used to calculate ideal body weight (IBW). Our calculator uses the 4 most popular ones: the Devine formula (1974), the Robinson formula (1983), the Miller formula (1983), and the Hamwi formula (1964). It also provides a weight range based on a healthy Body Mass Index (BMI).
Why are there multiple formulas for ideal weight?
Biological bodies are highly variable. Doctors and researchers have tweaked the equations over the years to account for differences in global populations, lifespans, and general body composition.
Does the ideal weight calculator account for muscle mass?
No. Like BMI, ideal weight formulas are strictly based on height and gender. They do not distinguish between muscle and fat. Bodybuilders or highly athletic individuals may weigh more than their "ideal weight" but be perfectly healthy with low body fat percentages.
What is the most accurate formula?
The Devine formula is the most widely used formula in medical settings and pharmacology (dosing medications based on weight). However, the "Healthy BMI Range" is often more useful for setting long-term health and fitness goals because it gives you a broad range to aim for rather than a single number.
