Detecting your IP address…

What Is a Public IP Address?

A public IP address is the unique numerical label assigned to your internet connection by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Every device that communicates on the internet must have a public IP so that servers know where to send data back to you — much like a postal address for your home network.

The version you are most likely using is IPv4 (e.g. 203.0.113.42), a 32-bit address. As IPv4 addresses become scarce, ISPs are increasingly assigning IPv6 addresses (e.g. 2001:0db8::1), which use 128 bits and offer a vastly larger address space.

Your public IP differs from your private IP (e.g. 192.168.x.x), which only exists inside your local network. Websites and online services see your public IP, not your private one.

Dynamic IP

Most home connections use a dynamic IP that changes when your router reconnects or the ISP renews the lease.

Static IP

Business or server connections often use a fixed static IP that never changes — useful for hosting services.

VPN / Proxy

Using a VPN or proxy replaces your real IP with the server's IP, masking your true location from websites.

Why Would You Need to Know Your IP Address?

  • Remote access & port forwarding: Setting up a home server, gaming server, or remote desktop requires knowing your public IP so others can connect to you directly.
  • Troubleshooting network issues: IT teams use your IP to diagnose connectivity problems, verify VPN tunnels, or confirm ISP-level routing behaviour.
  • Verifying VPN or proxy effectiveness: After enabling a VPN, checking your IP here confirms whether your real address is actually hidden from websites.
  • Geo-restriction debugging: Streaming services and content platforms restrict access by IP location. Knowing your IP helps diagnose why content may be unavailable.
  • Security & privacy awareness: Understanding what information your IP reveals — country, city, ISP — helps you make informed decisions about your online privacy.
